New Orleans Pelicans draft pick EJ Liddell suffers torn ACL in right knee, out indefinitely

LAS VEGAS – New Orleans Pelicans second-round pick EJ Liddell suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Monday’s summer league competition and will be out indefinitely.

When Liddell went down against the Atlanta Hawks in the third quarter of the game, his right knee got stuck under him. In two games in Las Vegas, Liddell averaged 4.5 points and rebounded 4.0.

The Pelicans’ worst fear came on Monday when he was injured when he was thrown off the court by teammates. An MRI in Las Vegas on Monday night confirmed the injury.

Liddell, who spent three years in Ohio State, was first rounded up by several drafting experts, including ESPN’s Jonathan Givoni, for the 2022 NBA Draft, with a total of 21 prospects. However, Liddle went 41st overall to the Pelicans.

Liddell was the third All-American team in the 2021-22 college season and was named in the All-Big Ten First Team and All-Big Ten Defensive Team First Team. He averaged 19.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.6 blocks per game in 32 games for Ohio State last year.

New Orleans has 15 guaranteed contracts on their roster from 2021-22 after 14 overs and the team selected Dyson Daniel as the No. 8 pick in the draft.

Pelicans can make room for Liddell’s contract or slot them into one of their two-way locations.
