Christy Mavis scored in the 89th minute to give Mexico a 1-0 victory over 10 players in the final Group A match of the CONCACAF W Championship on Monday at San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico.
The United States women’s national team won Group A by nine points (3-0-0). Jamaica (2-1-0, six points) are in second place with a 4-0 win over Haiti (1-2-0, three points) on Monday. Mexico (0–3–0, no points) reached the final and was eliminated from the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The United States will face Costa Rica in the semi-finals on Thursday, while Jamaica will face Canada. The final match is on July 18. Four semi-finalists have been named for next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, while third-place finishers, Haiti and Panama, are heading to the FIFA Interconferences playoffs in search of a bid for the World Cup.
Mavis was on the goal line when Emily Sonnett’s knee shot rebounded before goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez hit the ball.
Mexico lost a player in the 73rd minute when Lisbeth Oval was given a red card after a video review for her challenge to Rose Lavale. The Oval placed his stud on Lovell’s ankle.
The U.S. soon took advantage of Alex Morgan’s corner kick from Megan Rapino on a close post, but her header went ahead of the long post.
Mexico scored against Casey Murphy in the 87th minute on a lone shot by Jimena Lopez.
The United States scored the first of two goals for the tournament: a place in the top two in Group A, securing a place in the next World Cup. The US team is a two-time World Cup winner.
Another goal is to win the CONCACAF W Championship to get an automatic berth at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
While the United States needed a win or a draw to take first place in the group to reach the semi-finals, the Mexicans were disappointed after losing to Jamaica (1-0) and Haiti (3-0). They probably needed a win to get a place in the Interconferences playoffs.
Mexico played with inspiration in the first half and Margaret Purse of the United States sent a shot from the right from the Mexican goal box and got some luck early on when she came out of a long post in the 15th minute.
