Toronto Blue Jays hitting coach Guillermo Martinez suspended 5 games, fined for conduct during pregame lineup card exchange

The Toronto Blue Jays hitting coach Guillermo Martinez was suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount for contacting referee Doug Eddings while exchanging lineup cards before Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox and for his non-playing behavior, the league announced Friday.

Martinez was ruled out of the game after a handshake with the umpires on the home plate. He then began arguing with Eddings one-on-one before returning to the Toronto Dugout.

The disagreement probably happened the night before, when Eddings was the home plate umpire on Tuesday. Several close calls caused controversy from both benches during and after the game, and Blue Jess pitching coach Pete Walker was fired. The White Sox won 7-6 in 12 innings.

Coaches and managers are not allowed to appeal the suspension, so Martinez will begin service on Friday when the Blue Jays play in Milwaukee.
