It is learned that the Committee of Administrators (COA), which manages the operations of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), has already informed the Sports Authority of India (SAI) about the alleged incident.
“Currently, there is an incident of misconduct in the under-17 women’s team that is touring Europe. AIFF adopts a zero-tolerance policy in terms of discipline. As a preliminary action, the federation has temporarily suspended the person pending further investigation, ”the COA said in a statement.
“The AIFF has asked the person concerned to stop all contact with the team, return to India immediately and be present for further investigation upon his arrival,” the statement said.
The team is currently on a tour of Europe as part of preparations for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be held in India from October 11 to 30. Although the COA did not name the person involved, sources claimed that it was the team’s assistant coach, Alex Ambrose, who forced the minor to perform an “inappropriate” act.
Ambrose, 39, has represented the Indian national football team in six matches and scored a goal against Singapore during their winning LG Cup campaign in 2002. He played against North Korea at home and away in the 2003 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Fixtures
According to sources, head coach Thomas Denerby himself witnessed the “incident” and immediately informed the AIFF.
The source said, “After Denverby sent the report from Europe, the COA took immediate action and informed the SAI. The offender was called back without wasting time. Since the girl is a minor, Ambrose is also prepared to face criminal charges.
Cases of sexual harassment are on the rise in Indian sports on a daily basis. Recently a female cyclist accused the national coach of misbehaving during a training trip to Slovenia. The coach has been sacked and a thorough investigation is underway. A female sailor had also accused her co-coach of making her uncomfortable while traveling abroad.
Member unions have demanded a life ban on the coach
Meanwhile, protesting the incident, member unions urged the COA and AIFF administration to launch an independent investigation and a life ban on Ambrose from the sport.
“The state association would like to recommend stricter action with legal and exemplary penalties, including a lifetime ban on football and revocation of their coaching licenses,” a statement said.
The state associations urged the COA and AIFF administration to appoint women safety officers with immediate effect to build trust in the system for women players and women working in football, especially with national teams and at the AIFF House in New Delhi. It added.
The member union “politely requests” the administration to replace all male support staff with female staff as soon as possible.
