Texas longhorns slugger Evan Melandez wins Golden Spikes award

Omaha, Neb. – Texas fielder Evan Melendez was announced on Friday as the winner of the 2022 Golden Spikes Award, the highest amateur baseball player in the United States.

Melendez, a 22-year-old redshirt junior, helped Longhorn reach the Men’s College World Series, where he lost to Notre Dame and Texas A&M. He led Texas with an average of .387 and topped the country with 32 homers and 94 RBIs.

Melandez was voted the 12-man of the year after leading the conference with 28 homers and a .421 batting average of 85 RBIs.
