The Tampa Bay Rays placed two starting position players and one of their starting pitchers on the injured list on Sunday.
Shortstop Wanderer Franco (wrist), and center fielder Kevin Kirmeyer (left hip swelling) were placed on the 10-day injury list, while left-hander Jeffrey Springs (stiffness in his right lower leg) was placed on the 15-day injured list. The list was kept.
Franco dropped the Reds’ defeat in the middle of the first inning on Saturday after facing a foul on the pitch due to a right hand and wrist problem. He will see a doctor in St. Petersburg on Monday. Franco is believed to be injured, manager Kevin Cash said Saturday, losing 5-4 in 10 innings. If a hamstring fracture occurs, Franco can be sidelined for six to eight weeks.
Taylor Walls is expected to have a big time playing at shortstop in Franco’s place in 58 games this season with five homers, 23 RBIs and .704 OPS.
Kirmayer, who has hit .228 in 63 games this season with seven homers, 22 RBIs and .649 OPS, will meet the hip specialist next week.
The Springs, who are 19-2 (with 11 starts) 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA this season, made their final debut against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. His IL move was retrofitted on Thursday.
Renने picked right-hander Calvin Foucher for Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
In the same move, Reese called back Durham’s infielder Jonathan Aranda, left-hander Josh Fleming, outfielder Luke Raleigh and right-hander Phoenix Sanders.
