Omaha, Neb. – Mississippi scored twice in the eighth inning of three runs on wild pitches and the rebels won their first national baseball title with a 4-2 victory over Oklahoma in the final of the College World Series on Sunday.
Rebels (42-23) became the eighth national champion to be eliminated from the Southeast Conference since 2009 and the trophy will remain in the state of Magnolia for the second year in a row. Won the state of Mississippi last year.
Wet Miss took advantage of a runner-up call that took a run from Oklahoma (45-24) in the sixth inning. The Rebels also beat Cade Horton’s excellent pitching performance, which set a CWS final record with 13 strikes.
Brandon Johnson came out in the ninth inning 1-2-3, catcher Hayden Dunhurst runs to the mound for a hug and then Sebastian Orduno swings and runs to handle Johnson when he misses on the final pitch.
The last team to make a big bid for the NCAA Tournament, the Rebels, went 2-1 in the eighth inning. Trevin Michaels relieved Horton, and Jacob Gonzalez hit one from the right to drive into the tying run.
Michael (4-2) then melted, opening the wild pitches that led Justin to the lead and another to Gonzalez.
Hunter Elliott hit three sixes in 6 1/3 innings. Mason Nichols and John Gaddis (4-2) put Johnson in ninth place.
During the 107-pitch performance, Horton allowed four hits and none went.
Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the sixth game, but when John Speckerman tried to catch Elliott’s throw, he was called in for a runner’s intervention. The runner’s intervention was called for to stop the first baseman. Tim Elko.
Elliott hit Jackson Nichols early in the inning and was third after a sacrifice and a wild pitch. He came home on Spikerman’s bunt, but after being told Spikerman was safe first, Wet Miss coach Mike Bianco asked for a video review.
Spykerman hit Elco’s glove as he ran first, the ball went into the wrong area. The call was reversed, Spykerman decided to go inside the base line while running through the bag, Nicklaus needed to go back to the third base.
