MIAMI: The New York Mets’ right-hander Max Scherzer will not be left out of the injury list and the club’s final series against the Miami Marlins begins on Sunday.
“He never told anyone,” Mets manager Buck Schulter said before the series opener on Friday. “It simply came to our notice then. He was talking to Max and telling everyone that he was making progress. That’s not where it should be. He is approaching. “
The three-time Sai Young Award winner has been sidelined since May 19 due to skewed tension. Sherzer, 37, who signed a three-year, 130 million free-agent deal with the Mets in the off-season, was 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts before moving on to the injury list.
Sherzer made his rehabilitation debut at Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday, throwing 65 pitches in 3 1/3 innings. He hit two runs, three hits, one run and six hits.
Sherzer traveled to Miami with the Mets and worked Thursday at the Mark Light Field on the University of Miami campus.
“He can still pull the pitch for anyone on Sunday but he’s not us,” Schulter said. “We’ll see how it feels in the next day or two to decide what happens next.”
Left-hander David Peterson will start against the Marlins on Sunday, Schulter said.
