Tampa, Fla. – Former Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashell is joining the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant.

Lightning general manager Julian Brisbois announced the move on Tuesday and selected Blashell to replace Derek Lalonde on the staff of coach John Cooper. Lalonde was appointed to replace Blashell in Detroit.

Blashell, 48, has coached the Red Wings for the past seven seasons, setting a record of 204-261-72. Detroit missed the playoffs in six of seven seasons.

Along with Lightning, Blashell joins a staff that includes assistant coaches Jeff Halpern and Rob Zetler, goaltender coach Frantz Jean and video coaches Nigel Kirwan and Brian Garlock.

Lightning, a two-time defending champion, lost to the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup final last month.
