Blatter and Platini were charged last year by Swiss authorities with fraud and other offenses related to the 2011 World Cup governing body’s payment of 2 million Swiss francs to former UEFA chiefs.
The trial is set to begin on Wednesday in the Federal Criminal Court in Belinzona, but Blatter has been ruled out of court due to chest pains.
Mr Blatter testified on Thursday that he had asked former French captain Platini to act as FIFA adviser when he was elected president in 1998.
The 86-year-old said the regulator could not afford the CHF 1m per year requested by Platini, but agreed to pay him 300,000 CHF per year, with the remaining cash to be settled at a later date.
Blatter told the court: “I knew when we started with Michel Platini it was not a total and we will see later.”
He said he shook hands with the “gentleman agreement.”
Mr Blatter said: “It was a deal between two players. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. “
Platini said: “I trust the president and I know he will pay me one day.”
Platini, 66, told the court he did not need the money when he stopped working for FIFA in 2002, after Blatter claimed the governing body was “broken”.
By January 2011, he had asked two former employees to pay FIFA after receiving substantial payments, and Platini revealed that they had been paid 10 days after the invoices were sent, with Blatter approving the transfer.
In 2015, Blatter was banned from football for eight years by FIFA, following an investigation by an ethics committee into what he described as “unreliable”. Platini was also given an eight-year suspension, which was later reduced.
Swiss Blatter has been accused of fraud, embezzlement, criminal misconduct and forging documents. Platini has been charged with fraud, forgery, involvement in criminal misconduct and forgery of documents.
Both Blatter and Platini deny any wrongdoing. The case continues.
