Top-ranked and world number one Sweetek has not lost since February, when she lost to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai and won six consecutive tournaments, including her second French Open title. It was the longest winning streak in 21st century women’s singles and it is now over.
The 21-year-old Polish player did not look comfortable on the grass in her first two rounds at Wimbledon and on Saturday the veteran Cornet defeated her 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 32 minutes.
At age 32, Cornet equaled A. Sugiyama’s record of winning the 62nd Grand Slam in a row. Reaching the Slam semifinals for the first time in Australia before reaching the third round at Roland Garros, she has enjoyed her best year in the Major.
Importantly, the famous skull of Wimbledon was already behind Cornet in this match. Eight years ago, Cornet defeated Serena Williams in the first Saturday championship match and on the same court.
On this occasion, Cornet took a quick double break against the former Wimbledon girls champion to take a 3-0 lead. Sweetek recovered from the break and returned to the starting set, but could not equalize.
Sweetke had a chance to enter the second game of the second set and took a 2-0 lead when Cornet’s forehand went long. Even though the lead was quickly destroyed, the looping backhand returned the winning set with a glowing stop volley of Cornet Saving Game Point.
From there, Cornet pulled away and Sweetek lost confidence as the match went away from him. In her 15th Wimbledon, Cornet was able to celebrate another show-stopping moment.
