The WGC-HSBC Championships to be held in Shanghai on October 27-30 have been canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions in China, the PGA Tour announced on Wednesday.
The decision was made in consultation with the China Golf Association. This is the third season in a row in which WGC-HSBC Champions have been canceled due to Covid-19 issues. In 2019, Rory McLaughlin was the last winner of the competition.
The senior vice president of PGA Tour said, “We have worked with all the tours as well as the China Golf Association on the feasibility of hosting this fall’s WGC-HSBC Champions, but unfortunately the logistical consequences made it difficult to cancel the event. “We are grateful for HSBC’s involvement in this difficult time as we continue to navigate the changing COVID-19 climate,” International, Christian Hardy said in a statement.
Founded in 2005, the WGC-HSBC Champions is one of four events in the annual World Golf Championship (WGC). Her purse is 10.5 million and she is considered the leading in Asia.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship, scheduled for the same week, will now be played as a stand-alone event with full FedEx Cup points and a पर् 6.5 million incremental purse.
Last month, the PGA Tour announced that the CJ Cup would be moved to Kangaroo Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina. The tournament, which runs from October 20-23, will be renamed the CJ Cup in South Carolina.
The first three editions of the CJ Cup were played on nine bridges on Jeju Island, South Korea. COVID-19 has moved the event to Las Vegas over the past two years. It was played at Shadow Creek in 2020 and at Summit Club in 2021.
