U.S.A. judge dismisses rape case against Cristiano Ronaldo

Catherine Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September 2018, alleging that Ronaldo raped her in 2009 at the Hotel Penthouse Suite in Las Vegas, then paid her $ 375,000.

The lawsuit also alleges that the Portuguese footballer or his team violated a 2010 privacy clause in their financial settlement over alleged sexual harassment.

Ronaldo vehemently denied the allegations. His legal team insisted that the couple had consensual sex and that their settlement was later hacked due to a hacking incident.

What did the judge decide?

Judge Jennifer Dorsey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Nevada dismissed the lawsuit, saying Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stowell, was responsible for “unfaithful behavior” during the trial.

In a 42-page judgment issued Friday (June 10) but picked up by US media on Saturday (June 11), Dorsey accused Stovall of “misusing and blatantly tampering with due process.”

She criticized the use of a leak and stolen documents detailing the attorney-client discussion between Ronaldo and his lawyers.

Dorsey said the lawyer’s actions had tarnished the image of Ronaldo beyond injury and hurt Ronaldo.

“I think the purchase and continued use of these documents was a bad faith, and the misrepresentation of the documents and their confidential content in the fabric of (plaintiff Catherine) Mayorga’s claims will not hold Ronaldo’s prejudice against disqualifying Stowell.” “Strict restrictions are deserved,” the ruler said.

As a result, the judge said, “Mayorga lost her chance to pursue the case.”

What were the details of the lawsuit?

Mayorga claims to have met Ronaldo at a Las Vegas nightclub in June 2009.

It is said that she went to his hotel room with the football star and others, where he alleged that he attacked her in the bedroom.

She was 25 at the time and he was 24.

Mayorga’s lawyer argued that Ronaldo’s lawyers and deputies had put so much pressure on his client that she was not in a position to drop her criminal complaint and quietly accept the money.

His lawyer claimed additional damages based on allegations that Ronaldo or his associates violated the 2010 privacy agreement, and published reports of financial settlement in European news outlets.

In 2018, the German magazine the spiegel The whistleblower portal published an article based on documents obtained from football leaks.

Ronaldo’s legal team blamed the report on electronic data leaks of hacked documents from law firms and other organizations in Europe, which were later put up for sale.

The footballer’s lawyer has also accused him of tampering with information.

Police and prosecutors said Mayorga went to the police shortly after their visit, but the investigation was abandoned because she did not identify her alleged assailant or explain where the incident took place.

Las Vegas police reopened their rape investigation after Mayorga’s lawsuit was filed, but Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson decided not to pursue criminal charges in 2019.

Ronaldo, now 37, is the world’s highest paid and well-known sports star.

Before returning to Manchester United, he played for Real Madrid and Juventus and led the Portuguese national team.

He is a five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or for the best footballer in the world.
