PALMA, Spain – Top-seeded Daniel Medvedev will have to miss out on the title this season after losing in straight sets to Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarterfinals of the Mallorca Championship on Thursday.
Medvedev lost 6-3, 6-2 in consecutive finals in Germany and the Netherlands.
Medvedev, who had to miss Wimbledon due to Russian sanctions over the war in Ukraine, needed to come back to beat Aslan Karatsev in Wednesday’s 16th round.
With Nick Kyrgios withdrawing due to a stomach injury, Medvedev had only one break against Boutista Agut, ranked 20th, who reached the last 16 without playing.
Second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the semifinals, but needed three sets against American Marcos Girone to advance to the last four on Thursday. They won 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 in just two and a half hours.
“There was a lot of work today. It wasn’t easy,” said Sitsipas.
The sixth-seeded Greek, who leads the tour with 38 wins this season, will next face Benjamin Bonzi of France, who beat Daniel Altmeyer of Germany 6-3, 6-4.
