Sania Mirza, Mate Pavik enter Wimbledon mixed doubles semifinals after 3 sets victory

The sixth-seeded Indo-Croatian pair defeated fourth-seeded Canadian-Australian pair Gabriela Dabrowski and John Pierce 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the semifinals.

This is Sania’s best attempt at mixed doubles at Wimbledon as she had previously reached the semifinals in 2011, 2013 and 2015. But the semi-final match will not be easy for Sania and Pavic.

In the semifinals, Sania and Mate Pavic will face Colombia’s Robert Farah and seventh-seeded Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko or Great Britain’s Neil Skupski and second-seeded American Desira Kravic.

Now, Sania is one step closer to a rare career slam record in mixed doubles. Sania and Mahesh Bhupathi won the Australian Open in 2009, the French Open in 2012 and then the US Open in 2014 with Bruno Soares of Brazil.

Venus was defeated

Venus Williams and Jamie Murray’s mixed doubles score at Wimbledon came to an end after losing to the all-British pair of Alicia Barnett and Johnny O’Mara.

In a fight between two wildcard teams, the all-British pair of Barnett and O’Mara defeated former world No. 1 Williams and Murray 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (16) in two hours in doubles. And a 12-minute flick on the No. 2 court.

The new partnership had five match points in the decisive tiebreak, but eventually lost 18-16.

Williams, 42, had not played competitively since last August, but had applied for a wild card to attend the 24th Grand Slam.

In other mixed doubles results starting Sunday, Coco Goff and Jack Sock of the United States advanced to the semifinals, beating third-seeded Zhang Shui and Nicholas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Gough and Sock never had to face a breakpoint in their one-hour, 15-minute victory.

And Samantha Stosur won the first round, as she and fellow Australian Matthew Abden defeated Ulrik Ekeri and Joran Vligen 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

It took Stosur and Abden just two hours to secure a second-round match against first-round picks Anna Shibhara and Jean-Julian Roger.
