CHARLOTTE, NC – Shortly after next week’s mandatory minicamp, the Carolina Panthers will decide whether they are comfortable competing with sailor Matt Coral and former XFL star PJ Walker for an early quarterback job with Sam Darnold – or should they trade. Should be done for other veterans like Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garopolo.
ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky said he loves Darnold. Despite a 17-32 record as a starter, he still believes the 2018 draft third pick could be “one of the best quarterbacks in the league.”
So Orlowski says the Panthers would be a great place for the disgruntled Cleveland Browns quarterback Mayfield, but that’s not to disrespect Darnold. Mayfield has no respect for what Carolina can do.
“He has a chance to get really good with a solid quarterback game,” Orlowski said.
Orlowski liked the way General Manager Scott Fitter strengthened the roster after the Panthers’ unsuccessful attempt to capture Dawson Watson, making Mayfield cost-effective when the Browns joined.
Darnold and Mayfield are in the final stages of their rookie deal. Combine this with four years of NFL experience, and they have a great opportunity to motivate each other to improve, which makes them a better choice than Rookie Corals in the third round.
Mayfield’s biggest advantage over Coral and Darnold is 29 wins from 59 starts. The same argument can be made for the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Garapolo, who is 33-14 as a starter.
But Garopolo’s 2022 cap figure ($ 26.95 million) added to Darnold’s guaranteed salary ($ 18.8 million) makes him less attractive to the Panthers. There are some in the organization who question whether Garoppolo is an upgrade, though the same is true for Mayfield.

We’re all sure the Panthers are keeping their options open in terms of adding experienced quarterbacks, such as Mayfield, the first pick of the 2018 draft.
And so far, they feel comfortable with Darnold, who on Wednesday called coach Matt Roulette the best practice since joining the Panthers last season.
“I thought Sam was great,” Roulette said. “She’s taken a very hard line, ‘Oh, I’m going to control what I can. As an organization, she can’t control the decisions we make. By adopting that approach, we’ve seen Sam get better and better.”
Roulette also said that Darnold would eventually have to prove his worth in sports. So now it is important to decide whether the team is comfortable or not.
For the Mayfield deal to happen, the Panthers will have to pay the Browns most of his 2022 salary (18.8 million) and the Panthers will have to send a draft selection to Cleveland. According to league sources, the draft was negotiated when the Browns were willing to pay Mayfield only $ 3.5 million in salary.
Cleveland will have another option if it leaves Mayfield, but there are no signs that this will happen. If he is released, Mayfield will have control over where he goes, and other teams could be more profitable.
After next week’s minicamps, Roulette will meet with a fitter to discuss whether adding an experienced person makes sense financially and competitively.
Where there is certainty, especially for Orlowski, Mayfield will be a better option than coral in 2022.
New McCaddy, the new Carolina offensive coordinator, recently explained how much learning is needed to be able to compete for a role before training camp begins in July.
