New Zealand all-rounder De Grandhom has been ruled out of the England series due to injury

De Grandhome pulled off the third day of the first Test at Lord’s, with Joe Root’s brilliant unbeaten 115 as England won by five wickets in the fourth innings.

The Black Caps, who scored the most unbeaten 42 runs in New Zealand’s first innings and 1-27 in 11.5 overs, went off the field for treatment on Saturday and never returned.

De Grandhome would have added another crucial wicket to his list, but England captain Stokes was bowled out for 1 and chased down by the hosts for 277 for a 79-4 victory.

But De Grandhom will not play any more roles in the series, as scans showed a rupture of his right heel. All-rounder Michael Bracewell has been included in the squad for the first Test as a cover for Henry Nichols, the second Test starting at Trent Bridge starting Friday.

Black Caps coach Gary Steed said: “It’s really a shame Colin got injured so early in the series.

“He is a big part of our Test team and we will definitely miss him.

“It’s great to call someone like Michael who has been with the team since last month and is ready for the match.”

Stade confirmed that De Grandhom would not be able to play for the next 10 to 12 weeks, which would have ruled him out of the Test series against England as well as the white ball tours of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
