Chopra will confidently return to the Swedish capital on June 24, 18 with his first win of the season at the Quarten Games in Finland and will beat Grandpa’s Anderson Peters for the second time this month.
The Indian superstar won a silver medal in his first event of the season with a national record throw of 89.30 meters at the Pavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland on June 14. Chopra fell badly in the third attempt at the Quarten Games, but fortunately he was not injured.
The conditions were dangerous for spear throwers as the run was slippery due to rain. However, his first round throw of 86.64 meters was enough to get him a gold medal.
Peters’ name is on the list of participants in Stockholm, but he did not complete all his throws, recording his best throw of 71.94m at an event in Orimtila, Finland on Wednesday. The Grenada athlete has slipped into form with a season-leading throw of 93.07m after winning the Doha Diamond League.
After that, he threw 86.60m to finish third in the Pavo Nurmi Games and 84.75m in the Quarten Games. Olympic silver medalist Jacob Wadlage of the Czech Republic and compatriot Tokyo Games bronze medalist Viteslav Wesley will also be in the fray.
This will be the first time all the medalists at the Tokyo Olympics have played together this season. Wadlage, who finished sixth in the Pavo Nurmi Games with a best throw of 83.91 meters, returned from the Quarten Games.
The same is true of Julian Weber of Germany, who finished fifth in the Pavo Normi Games with 84.02 meters. Oliver Hallender of Finland, who won gold in the Pavo Nurmi Games with a big throw of 89.83 meters, also made a comeback from the Quarten Games. The 2017 German world champion and javelin thrower in more than 90 meters, Johannes Waiter, has been ruled out with an injury. He also withdrew from the German National Championships.
Another Indian, Murali Sreesankar, will also be taking part in the tournament, but his long jump is not included in the Diamond League. This is listed as an additional event. But the long jump is strong, featuring Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Tentoglu Miltiadis of Greece and World Indoor Championships silver medalist Theobias Montler.
Sreesanth is also participating in the tournament as part of preparations for the World Championships (July 15-24) and the Commonwealth Games (July 28-August 8).
