Home plate umpire Jerry Lane was knocked out in the Colorado Rockies game after hitting a foul tip on the face mask from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Home plate umpire Jerry Lane had to give up the Colorado Rockies’ 11-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the lower half of the sixth inning when the wrong tip of Randall Grichuk’s bat hit the top edge of his face mask.

Lane left the field under his own authority for further examination and treatment by the Rockies’ medical staff.

The game was delayed by a few minutes, while Chad Whitson donated protective gear before going behind the plate.

Lane initially ruled that Grichuk was hit off the pitch, but Ripley’s review determined that the ball went through the knob of Grichuk’s bat before catcher Carson Kelly dropped his glove and hit Lane’s mask.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
