Chicago White Sox fielder Danny Mendic had to face a torn ACL in the right knee in a 9-5 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, perhaps ending his season.
The team made the announcement on Thursday and also put Mendic on the 10-day injury list.
Mendic, who has scored .289 runs in 31 games this season, was fouled by left fielder Adam Hesley in the second inning after leaving Wednesday’s game with three home runs, 15 RBIs and .786 OPS. After MRI.
Right-hander Adam Engel, meanwhile, left Wednesday’s game after three innings, having been placed on the 10-day injury list due to a hamstring injury.
In other moves, infielder / outfielder Gavin Sheets was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, infielder Lenin Sosa was called up from Double-A Birmingham and outfielder Alloy Jimenez was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
The 22-year-old has scored .331 runs for Birmingham in 62 games this season, including 14 home runs, 48 RBIs and .933 OPS.
