On the fourth day of England’s third Test against New Zealand, which ended on Monday, Kent captain Billings was selected as Ben Fox’s iconic replacement.
Billings’ main contribution to the victory with seven wickets in hand was a bizarre catch in Neil Wagner’s knee.
He is one-day out of India’s Test series starting in Birmingham on Thursday and is now in line to play in the third Test.
The inclusion of Billings is the only change made by England, who have believed in Crowley despite some disappointing performances against New Zealand.
Crowley completed the three-match series with 87 runs and opener Alex Lees scored a ridiculous run in the second innings of the final Test.
India are 2-1 ahead of England ahead of the final Test, which was originally scheduled to be played last September but was canceled due to concerns over COVID-19.
Mayank Agarwal was called up after tourists announced on Monday that captain Rohit Sharma had tested positive for coronavirus.
