Death anniversary of Dilip Kumar: Dilip Kumar is one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema. He is credited with bringing systematic acting techniques to Bollywood. The late veteran actor was born on 11 December 1922 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) to a Pashtun family. He went to Mumbai for work. Before becoming the heartthrob of Bollywood, Dilip Kumar was working in the British Army canteen. There he caught the eye of the then leading actress Devika Rani and her husband Himanshu Rai, who hired him for his film company Bombay Talkies.
He made his acting debut in 1944 with Jwar Bhata. However, his first box-office hit was with Jugnu in 1947, after which he began to climb the ladder of success.
He got the title of ‘Tragedy King’ for his role as a lucky lover in Andaz, Devdas, Deedar, Jogan and many other films. The actor has given some blockbuster hit films including Mughal-e-Azam, Madhumati, Aan and Kohinoor. There was a time when Dilip Kumar decided to take a break. He returned to the big screen in 1981 with the movie ‘Kranti’.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his contribution to filmmaking. In 1994, he was also awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Nishan-e-Imtiaz was the only Indian actor to receive Pakistan’s highest civilian award. ,
Speaking of their personal lives, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala started as an onscreen couple and fell in love. They parted ways after Dilip testified against Madhubala and her father in a new round of court. In 1966, he married Saira Bano, 22 years his junior. They shared 54 years of married life.
Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7 last year at Hinduja Hospital. He died after a long illness. Even if they are no longer with us, their legacy will continue.
