Avery Johnson is a householder, which he fully demonstrated by committing in Kansas State on Tuesday.
Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound quarterback from Mecca High School in Kansas, ranks 94th on the ESPN 300. He chose the state of Kansas over Oregon and Washington.
“It’s really just Kansas State on me from the beginning,” he told ESPN. “Out of my first three schools, my sophomores were back at the end of the year. Like Oregon and Washington came in 2022. I have known them for only six months. But it really came down to it. Throughout the process, they always say, ‘Go where you want to go.’
“The state of Kansas has always shown that they want me the most. I think I can achieve all my goals and eventually reach the next level and grow in Kansas State. I thought, after putting it in perspective, it’s a no-brainer. “
As a junior for Mecca last year, he made a total of 3,629 yards (2,549 passing) and a total of 42 touchdowns (22 runs).
Johnson is the first ESPN 300 recruiter for the Wildcats in 2023 and the first ESPN 300 QB after Jake Rubley in 2021.
Johnson credited former Kansas State QB Colin Klein’s offensive coordinator on staff to Chris Klein before the ball game against LSU last season.
“I love their new offense that they were going there,” Johnson said. “I definitely think it’s right for me. It allows me to stay comfortable and do what I do best. I don’t have to run the ball in every match or throw the ball in every match. I think I can be a hybrid and just do my job. Can do. “
Johnson was named the Elite 11 quarterback over the weekend.
